A Place In The Sun: Safe in This Body, Safe in This Heart
Returning to the Home Frequency
For months I’ve sat at my computer, ready to write a newsletter, and found myself blank. So much has been unfolding in the world and in this country that it’s hard to know what to say without repeating myself. But I’m going to take this chance to be very human and open with everyone. The weight of it all sank me into a deep depression that I’m slowly crawling out of. I know many of you have been in that same boat, including spiritual and magickal authors and teachers as well. My heavy workload and packed schedule of traveling on top of everything has only deepened the strain. I don’t remember carrying this much psychic and emotional weight since Trump’s first administration, during the pandemic, when the horrors that ignited the Black Lives Matter movement were at their height.
This year it amplified for me after my Psychic Witch Retreat at the Omega Institute, followed by our Magickally Queer Weekend there. Both events were incredible, each with such a wonderful group of people. I left with my heart and spirit full but my mind and body exhausted after nearly 36+ hours of teaching and ritual on top of traveling difficulties. Returning home meant facing the heavy reality of what was unfolding in the country, and that exhaustion soon shifted into depression and burnout, especially when I found out that a family member had their cancer return after previously beating it.
If you’re feeling the same way, I want you to know that you are not alone. Many of us are carrying the weight of what is happening to people in this country, along with the horrors unfolding in Gaza and so many other places where lives are being shattered in the worst possible ways with injustice at an all time high. It is incredibly hard to move through these times without feeling overwhelmed, stressed, fearful, angry, and depressed when you have a working brain and heart. These emotions are a natural response to bearing witness to suffering and injustice on such a scale.
Feeling this way does not mean you are weak or that you’re unspiritual or unmagickal or any other such spiritual bypassing nonsense. It means your compassion is alive and that your spirit is still reaching toward solidarity with those who are hurting. These qualities of compassion, care for others, and concern for their wellbeing are exactly what must be protected within us and shared with those around us. Even though the heaviness can feel suffocating, there is a shared current moving through all of us who are awake to this moment. That current binds us together in grief, in care, and in the quiet determination to keep going.
Outside of activism and the fight against oppression, one of the greatest ways we can live these values is by being a beacon of goodness and compassion to the people in our own lives and in our immediate sphere of influence. The simple ways we show care to friends, family, and community matter deeply right now. Extending goodness and kindness to strangers carries even greater weight. It can be incredibly hard in these times, and I have found myself falling short of these ideals in ways I hesitate to admit, especially when faced with those who choose to be antagonistic.
Even so, I have been doing all I can in both mundane and magickal ways to help turn the tide of what is unfolding in the world. I continue to do magickal justice work in private solo spells, in group settings, and through the rituals I have been leading at conventions across the country that call for protection and healing of the most vulnerable among us and the dissolving of the ignorant and hateful mindset that’s taken a hold of a portion of the population. If you would like magickal resources for these, check out my previous post, Hope is a Spell: Magick for These Times.
As many of you know, I am a huge Chelsea Wolfe fan. Almost exactly a year ago, Rachel and I had the chance to bring her on our podcast to talk about the healing themes in her latest album She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She. The other night, I was lying in bed listening to music, worn down and burned out, when a track from that album came on: “A Place in the Sun.”
“A Place in the Sun by Chelsea Wolfe
Home
But I was lost
I was lost
HmHome
Where we split
A splinter in the skinHome
Lantern-lit
Only one step aheadSafe with the one not so toilsome to love
I am safe in this body, safe in this heart
I have made it this far to live this lifeClaim what you want and take your place in the sun
Hearing songs in the silence, wings in my lungs
And with the air, my guide, let me flyLet me fly
Fly (ooh)To fly
Ooh (take me) to fly, ooh
Lost, oh-oh
Lost, (take me) home
Home, (take me) home
Home, (to fly) home
Also there’s this beautiful stripped version of the song:
Listening to “A Place in the Sun” reminded me to return to my home frequency, a concept and practice I first learned from my husband which he put in his book The Witch’s Book of Power and later shared my own version of in The Psychic Art of Tarot with credit to Devin for the original. The lyrics spoke of safety in the body and heart, and that echoed the essence of what the home frequency offers: a return to the inner place where my own energy is clear and steady. In that space I can find grounding, reset after overwhelm, and reconnect with the part of myself that endures beneath the weight of everything happening around us. Returning to this practice has been the most healing for everything going on out of all the spiritual practices and meditations that I’ve been doing. So I thought I’d share the practice as I present it in The Psychic Art of Tarot in hopes that you will find it helpful as well. The song was such a powerful reminder for me that I might get a tattoo based on it.
Exercise 27 - Finding Your Home Frequency Understanding
From The Psychic Art of Tarot by Mat Auryn
Understanding your home frequency will enhance your abilities as a psychic, intuitive, and empath, helping you distinguish what is and isn’t part of your energy or emotions. With time and practice, aim to be able to tune in to this frequency at will just by thinking about it. Be aware that mastering this exercise might take time and practice, but it will enable you to recognize when you’re out of alignment with your personal home frequency almost immediately.Begin by finding a comfortable position.
Close your eyes and take deep and measured breaths.
As you inhale, visualize the divine energy that surrounds us entering and filling your body.
On exhaling, imagine all your tensions and negative emotions being expelled from your body.
When your mind starts to wander and thoughts emerge, simply acknowledge them and allow them to drift away, like windswept clouds.
Recall memories where you’ve felt confident, happy, loved, creative, powerful, and self-assured.
Allow the emotions associated with these memories to bubble up within you. Feel this positive energy flowing through you, washing away any negativity or barriers.
Understand that this energy is resetting your vibrations, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and empowered.
Visualize this energy reset as a return to your personal “factory settings.”
Consider this energy as your home frequency. Visualize it as a light radiating within and around you. Use your will and imagination to expand this light from your body and aura into your surroundings.
Speaking of The Psychic Art of Tarot, I’m extremely proud and grateful to announce that it received the Gold Award in the Coalition of Visionary Resources (COVR) awards for best tarot book of the year and runner up for a similar award by the Tarot Association of British and International members CARTI awards. Our podcast also won People’s Choice Award and Silver for podcasts in the COVR awards. Thank you to all of you who voted!
Also want to remind people that I will be returning to Omega in New York this October for The Professional Psychic Retreat with Rachel True, Danielle Dionne, Michelle Welch, and Devin Hunter. If you want to learn the ins-and-outs of the psychic field of work to take your private practice pro or if you want to enhance one you already have, be sure not to miss this! I’ll also be there a week earlier for Devin’s Fiber Spirit Retreat, though I’ll just be attending, not teaching. (I’m not a knitter or crocheter myself but looking forward to learning!) Plus with any of these retreats, it’s incredibly healthy for the mind, body, and spirit to just escape for a bit in such a beautiful environment with spiritually minded people.
After that I’ll be the keynote speaker at the online event The Gathering of Witches with some of my favorite witches like Judika Illes, Lilith Dorsey, Laura Tempest Zakroff, Nicholas Pearson, and others. You can register by clicking here.
But before all of that I’ll be at the Northwest Tarot Symposium in Portland with Chas next month, which is my favorite tarot convention. Click here for registration and information.
One last thing I want to remind everyone about is that The Psychic Witch Deluxe Edition (Hardcover & Expanded) is available for preorder. Foolish Fish did a beautiful review of it which you can watch here:
That is all for now. I hope everyone is doing well and please allow yourself room to actually rest and restore during these times and to remember that finding moments of joy and peace is also an act of defiance in the face of oppression.
